Skardu was historically the seat of the Kingdom of Baltistan — often called 'Little Tibet' for its Tibetan-influenced heritage — and sat on trade routes connecting Kashmir, Tibet, and Central Asia. Balti architecture and place names still carry that Tibetic legacy today. In the modern era, Skardu became the launch point for Karakoram mountaineering expeditions, and its role as the gateway to K2 and the world's highest peaks has defined its identity for the last century.
The Balti people speak Balti, a Tibetic language, and practice a distinct blend of traditions shaped by centuries of contact with Tibet, Kashmir, and the wider Islamic world — most Balti today are Shia or Nurbakhshi Muslim. Stone-and-timber architecture, apricot cultivation, and a deep, practical relationship with high-altitude mountaineering (as guides, porters, and expedition support) all define daily life here more than almost anywhere else in Pakistan.
Weather in Skardu & the Karakoram
Skardu sits in a high-altitude cold desert climate — dry, with big temperature swings between day and night. Summers (June to September) are mild and are the only realistic window for trekking toward K2 and the wider Karakoram; winters are severe, with heavy snow closing most high routes.
