The Makran coast has been home to fishing communities for centuries, sitting along maritime trade routes that connected the Indus region to the Gulf and beyond. Gwadar itself has an unusual history — it was administered as an exclave of the Sultanate of Oman for nearly two centuries before Pakistan purchased it in 1958. That legacy, combined with the coast's more recent emergence as a deep-sea port and infrastructure hub, sits alongside a much older way of life that hasn't changed nearly as fast.
Coastal Balochistan is Baloch fishing-community territory, distinct in daily rhythm from the pastoral Baloch culture further inland — life here has long revolved around the sea, wooden fishing boats, and small harbor towns. Balochi language, dress, and hospitality customs remain strong, even as the region undergoes rapid infrastructure development.
