Cholistan sits along the ancient bed of the Hakra river, once part of the same river system that supported Indus Valley civilization settlements, and later served as a route for camel caravans crossing between the Indus plains and Rajasthan. Its most visible landmark, Derawar Fort, was built by the Bhati Rajputs and later held by the Abbasi Nawabs of Bahawalpur, whose massive square bastions still dominate the desert skyline for miles around.
Cholistan's desert-dwelling communities have historically followed a semi-nomadic, pastoralist way of life centered on livestock and camel herding, moving seasonally in search of water and grazing. That heritage shows up today in distinctive desert crafts — mirror-work embroidery, hand-thrown pottery, and woven textiles — that remain a living part of local identity, not just a museum piece.
